The Kyoto room is four and a half tatami, which is to say about seven square metres, which is to say smaller than most fitting rooms.

What fits

One rail, twelve pieces, a bench and a window that faces east. Everything else is brought from a cupboard in the corridor, one piece at a time, by hand.

We assumed this would frustrate people. It has done the opposite. Customers stay roughly three times longer than in Amsterdam, and buy about the same amount, and remember it.

The lesson, such as it is

A small room forces a sequence. You cannot see everything at once, so you are shown one thing, and then another, and each one gets the attention it was made for.
